The universe is about 13.8 billion years old, yet the observable universe spans approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter. At first glance, this seems impossible—but the explanation lies in the expansion of space itself.
🚀 The speed of light limits how far light can travel through space, but it does not limit how much space itself can expand. While light from distant galaxies has been traveling toward us for 13.8 billion years, the fabric of the universe has continued to stretch during that entire journey.
✨ As a result, many galaxies that emitted the light we see today are now much farther away than 13.8 billion light-years. The most distant observable regions are currently estimated to be about 46.5 billion light-years away in every direction, giving the observable universe a diameter of roughly 93 billion light-years.
🔭 This doesn’t mean anything has traveled through space faster than light. Instead, space itself has expanded, carrying galaxies farther apart while remaining fully consistent with Einstein’s theory of general relativity.
