The man who owned the biggest single piece of Lufthansa died last night. Most people in Germany never learned his name.

Klaus-Michael Kuehne was 89. He died in Schindellegi, Switzerland, and his company confirmed it this morning, tagesschau reports. He joined the family freight business in 1958 and built it into Kuehne+Nagel, roughly 88,000 people working out of more than 1,300 sites.

But the airline is only part of it.

His holding company sits on around 20 percent of Lufthansa, the single biggest stake anyone holds in the airline. It also holds about 30 percent of the shipping line Hapag-Lloyd and a piece of Flix, the company behind FlixBus. Fly, ship a parcel, or take a long distance bus in this country and some of that money passed through his companies.

Manager Magazin put his fortune at 23.5 billion euros, sixth biggest in Germany. He got there moving other people's boxes.
