It's easy to forget how far the Roman Empire once reached.
For centuries, part of what is now the Netherlands stood directly on its frontier.
The Rhine marked a major boundary.
Along it, the Romans built forts, military camps, roads and harbours.
Soldiers lived here.
Ships moved along the waterways.
Traders and civilians settled near military bases.
The frontier was not simply a line on a map.
It was a living border zone.
Today, much of this Roman world is hidden beneath modern fields, roads and cities.
People walk above it every day without realizing that Roman soldiers once guarded the same landscape.
