A silo full of sand can now outlast the longest winter nights. In the town of Kankaanpää, Finland, the world's first commercial sand battery went online in 2022, storing up to 8 megawatt-hours of thermal energy. The concept is beautifully simple: surplus solar or wind electricity heats air, which is piped through an insulated steel silo filled with ordinary construction sand. The sand reaches 500–600°C and stays hot for months with minimal loss. When needed, that heat is extracted for district heating or industrial processes. No lithium, no cobalt, no complex supply chains — just sand, steel, and insulation. This system costs a fraction of lithium-ion storage for long-duration thermal applications, and it can sit for weeks without degrading. Finland's long, dark winters made it the ideal proving ground, but the technology is now being explored globally for factories, greenhouses, and city-scale heating networks.
