German researchers are developing solar-driven technologies that can use concentrated sunlight to produce hydrogen from water. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) operates major facilities for testing solar hydrogen systems, including reactors that use intense solar radiation to drive water-splitting processes.
The “nearly one-third” figure needs a little context: DLR says theoretical analyses of some thermochemical solar-hydrogen cycles indicate an efficiency potential of more than 30%. Separately, a 2026 report on a German Fraunhofer solar-hydrogen system described an experimental result of 31.3% solar-to-hydrogen efficiency.
If such efficiencies can be achieved reliably at large scale, concentrated solar hydrogen could reduce the energy losses associated with conventional multi-step hydrogen production and provide a pathway toward low-carbon fuel made directly from sunlight and water. DLR is continuing research into improving these solar processes and their practical efficiency.
