Located about 5.8 billion light-years away, the Phoenix Cluster (SPT-CL J2344-4243) is one of the most massive and spectacular galaxy clusters known.
At its heart lies a giant central galaxy surrounded by an enormous reservoir of hot gas. Astronomers have observed an extraordinary amount of star formation in the cluster’s core — making it a fascinating laboratory for studying how galaxies and supermassive black holes evolve. 
The Phoenix Cluster is so immense that its combined mass is estimated at around 2.5 quadrillion times the mass of the Sun. 
A cosmic giant… powered by some of the universe’s most extreme physics.
