Japan is moving closer to acquiring advanced autonomous combat drones as the Ground Self-Defense Force evaluates Germany's Helsing HX-2 strike drone. German defense company Helsing has partnered with Japanese conglomerate Rakuten to help navigate Japan's defense procurement system and potentially secure a larger contract. The HX-2 is designed as an autonomous strike aircraft capable of operating with artificial intelligence and coordinating missions without requiring constant human control. Japan has increasingly emphasized unmanned systems as it adapts to lessons from Ukraine and the growing military power of China. The potential acquisition would represent another step in Tokyo's effort to integrate autonomous systems into its defense structure. The partnership is also notable because Rakuten has previously supported demonstrations involving AI-controlled drone swarms. If Japan proceeds with the HX-2, it could provide the Self-Defense Forces with a new generation of relatively inexpensive strike aircraft capable of operating in environments where traditional manned aircraft face significant risks.
