Have you ever noticed that almost everything in space spins? Planets spin. Moons spin. Stars spin. Galaxies spin. Even black holes can spin.
So, why?
It all begins with enormous clouds of gas and dust. These clouds aren't perfectly still; they have tiny, random motions. When gravity pulls the cloud together, that tiny bit of rotation gets squeezed into a smaller and smaller space, causing it to spin faster.
It's the same reason an ice skater spins faster when they pull in their arms.
This is called conservation of angular momentum, and it's one of the most important rules in physics. Once something is spinning, it's surprisingly difficult to stop, especially in space, where there's almost no friction to slow it down.
That's why the young Sun spun. The planets inherited that motion as they formed. Their moons did too. Even many asteroids are still spinning billions of years later.
Here's another cool fact: the universe doesn't have a preferred direction. Some worlds spin clockwise, others counterclockwise. Venus even spins backwards compared to most planets in our Solar System, and Uranus rotates almost on its side!
And here's the most incredible part: all of it, from spinning planets to swirling galaxies, may have begun with the tiniest, almost imperceptible rotation in a cloud of gas billions of years ago.
Sometimes, the Universe builds its greatest wonders from the smallest beginnings. ✨
