Britain's nuclear comeback is accelerating. US advanced-reactor developer X-energy and UK energy giant Centrica are advancing a partnership to deploy up to 6 gigawatts of advanced nuclear capacity in the United Kingdom — one of the largest small modular reactor (SMR) commitments announced anywhere in the world. X-energy's Xe-100 is a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor designed to be built in factories and assembled on site, slashing the cost and time that have crippled traditional nuclear megaprojects. Six gigawatts is a serious number — roughly enough capacity to power millions of British homes with steady, carbon-free electricity, day and night, wind or no wind. With aging plants retiring and electricity demand climbing from heat pumps, EVs, and data centers, the UK is turning to SMRs as the workhorse of its future grid. The small reactor revolution just found its biggest stage yet.
