Chinese researchers have reported a promising advance in the treatment of type 2 diabetes using a patient's own stem cells. In the study, scientists reprogrammed the patient's blood cells into stem cells, transformed them into insulin-producing pancreatic islet cells, and transplanted them back into the body.
The patient no longer needed insulin within about 11 weeks after the transplant and later stopped taking diabetes medication. More than 30 months of follow-up showed stable blood sugar control and restored insulin production.
While this is an important milestone, it does not mean that type 2 diabetes has been cured in general. The treatment has so far been reported in only a small number of patients, and larger clinical trials are still needed to confirm its long-term safety, effectiveness, and whether it can become a widely available therapy.
