The Giant UK Battery Can Inject Hundreds of Megawatts into the National Grid in Less Than One Second
The UK is home to the Minety Battery Energy Storage System in Wiltshire, one of the world's largest battery storage facilities. It can store 320 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity across a site covering about 35 football pitches, helping balance the country's electricity supply.
One of Minety's biggest advantages is its incredible speed. During sudden power shortages, unexpected spikes in electricity demand, or drops in wind generation, the battery system can deliver hundreds of megawatts of electricity to the grid in less than one second.
This rapid response helps keep the UK's grid frequency close to its required 50 Hz, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply. In the past, gas-fired peaker plants handled these emergencies, but battery storage can react much faster while producing no direct carbon emissions.
Battery energy storage is expanding rapidly across the UK. More than 4 GWh of new grid-scale battery capacity was installed in 2023, exceeding the combined additions of the previous three years. Continued investment is expected to significantly increase storage capacity by 2026.
The success of projects like Minety shows that battery storage is becoming a key part of modern electricity infrastructure rather than just a backup technology. As renewable energy grows, large-scale batteries are expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing dependence on fossil fuel power plants.
