The Flesh and Blood of Jesus preserved for 1.200 years : The Miracle of Lanciano (Italy)

For nearly 2,000 years, the Catholic Church has proclaimed a profound mystery: at every Holy Mass, the bread and wine truly become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This teaching, known as the Real Presence or Transubstantiation, has been believed by Christians since the time of the Apostles.
Yet throughout history, God has occasionally allowed extraordinary signs to strengthen the faith of His people. Among the most remarkable is the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano, the first documented Eucharistic miracle in Church history.

In the 8th century, more than 1,200 years ago in the small town of Lanciano, Italy, a Catholic monk and priest was celebrating the Holy Mass. Although he had faithfully served God, he struggled with a painful question:
"Is Jesus truly present in the Eucharist, or is it only a symbol?"
As he reached the words of consecration, the very moment when the Church believes the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, something extraordinary happened before his eyes.
The consecrated Host visibly transformed into human flesh, and the wine in the chalice became living blood.
The priest was overwhelmed with awe. His doubts disappeared instantly as he realized he was witnessing a miracle that would inspire countless believers for centuries to come.

Today, the miraculous flesh and blood are still preserved in Lanciano, Italy, where pilgrims from around the world come to pray and witness this extraordinary sign.
Unlike ordinary human tissue, these relics have remained intact for more than twelve centuries without any known preservatives or embalming techniques.
Even more remarkable, modern scientific studies have confirmed astonishing details about the relics.

In the 1970s, the relics underwent careful scientific examination by respected medical experts.
Their findings were remarkable:
The flesh was identified as human heart tissue, specifically striated muscular tissue from the myocardium of the left ventricle, the part of the heart responsible for pumping blood throughout the body.
The blood was determined to be human blood type AB.
No traces of preservatives, artificial chemicals, or embalming substances were found.
Despite being exposed for centuries, the flesh and blood have remained preserved in a way that continues to astonish scientists.
Interestingly, blood type AB has also been reported in other famous Christian relics, including studies associated with the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo. While these findings do not by themselves prove the supernatural nature of the relics, many Catholics find the consistency noteworthy.

Lanciano was not the last Eucharistic miracle.
In 1263, another extraordinary event took place in Bolsena, Italy.
A German priest known as Father Peter of Prague was making a pilgrimage to Rome. Like the monk at Lanciano centuries earlier, he struggled with doubts about Christ's Real Presence in the Eucharist.
While celebrating Holy Mass in the Church of Saint Christina, he elevated the consecrated Host and suddenly it began to bleed, staining the corporal, the white linen cloth placed upon the altar during Mass.
The miracle was reported to Pope Urban IV, who investigated the event and accepted it as authentic.
The following year, in 1264, Pope Urban IV established the universal Feast of Corpus Christi, a solemn celebration honoring the Body and Blood of Christ.
To enrich the celebration, he commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas to compose hymns in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. Among these masterpieces is the beloved Eucharistic hymn Adoro Te Devote, still prayed and sung by Catholics around the world during Eucharistic Adoration and processions.

The Church has never taught that Catholics must believe in private miracles, including Eucharistic miracles. Faith rests first and foremost upon Jesus Christ, Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the teaching authority of the Church.
However, these miracles serve as powerful reminders of what the Church has always believed:
The Holy Eucharist is not merely a symbol. It is truly Jesus Christ - Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.
Every time the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is celebrated, Christ becomes sacramentally present upon the altar, offering Himself to His people just as He promised:
"For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink." - John 6:55
And at the Last Supper, Jesus declared:
"This is my body... This is my blood of the covenant." - Matthew 26:26–28

The greatest miracle is not only what happened centuries ago in Lanciano or Bolsena.
The greatest miracle happens every single day on Catholic altars throughout the world.
The Creator of the universe humbles Himself to become truly present under the appearance of bread and wine so that He may unite Himself intimately with His people in Holy Communion.
This is the depth of Christ's love.
As St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests, beautifully said:
"There is nothing so great as the Eucharist. If God had something more precious, He would have given it to us."
If it has been a long time since you last attended Mass, perhaps this is your invitation.
Return to Christ.
Go to Confession.
Receive Him worthily in the Holy Eucharist.
Jesus is waiting for you not merely as a symbol, but truly present with His infinite love, ready to nourish your soul and draw you closer to eternal life.
