China has officially launched the world's first 100-GWh full-production-chain energy storage base in Yichang, Hubei Province, marking a major milestone in large-scale battery manufacturing. Developed by Envision AESC, the super factory integrates the entire lithium battery production process—from electrode manufacturing and battery cells to battery packs and complete energy storage systems. The first shipment of its new 790-Ah energy storage cells has already been exported to Germany for grid-scale energy storage projects.
The project was completed at remarkable speed. Construction of Phase I began in October 2025 and reached production in less than a year, providing an annual manufacturing capacity of 40 GWh. Phase II, which is already under construction, will add another 60 GWh of battery cell capacity along with 60 GWh of energy storage system production, bringing the site's total capacity to 100 GWh.
A key highlight of the factory is its 790-Ah prismatic battery cell, currently one of the world's largest mass-produced wound energy storage cells. Each cell stores more than 2.5 kWh of energy, offers a volumetric energy density above 440 Wh/L, delivers 96% round-trip efficiency, and is designed to last for more than 12,000 charge-discharge cycles, making it suitable for decades of grid-scale operation.
The new batteries are designed to support renewable energy integration by storing electricity from solar and wind farms and supplying power when demand is high. Envision AESC says the 790-Ah cells also power its new 12.5-MWh AI-enabled energy storage system, which can improve project returns by optimizing charging, discharging, and overall system performance. More than 50% of the factory's production capacity has already been reserved by overseas customers, highlighting strong international demand.
The launch reflects the rapidly growing global energy storage market, driven by expanding renewable energy, AI data centers, and grid modernization. Envision AESC now operates 14 battery manufacturing bases worldwide, has delivered more than 100 GWh of energy storage cells, and has participated in over 400 energy storage projects globally. The Yichang super factory further strengthens China's position as one of the world's leading suppliers of advanced battery and energy storage technologies.
