Researchers in Germany have created an innovative material that can pull water from the air while naturally cooling buildings—without relying on energy-intensive systems. 

The new material features specially designed porous structures that capture moisture from the atmosphere and convert it into liquid water when conditions are favorable. Its surface also reflects sunlight and releases heat into the sky, helping keep buildings cooler through passive cooling.
In laboratory tests under ideal conditions, the material produced up to 1.8 liters (about 60 ounces) of water per day.
While some reports suggest it cools buildings “three times better” than conventional air conditioning, the technology isn’t intended to replace AC units. Instead, it reduces the amount of cooling buildings need by lowering surface temperatures naturally, which can significantly cut energy use.
This breakthrough could provide a sustainable way to improve access to water while reducing electricity consumption, especially in hot, dry regions facing increasing water shortages.
