Finnish energy company Wärtsilä has achieved a world first by connecting a 100% green hydrogen engine to Spain’s national electricity grid in Bermeo, a fishing town in northern Spain.
The hydrogen-powered engine burns pure hydrogen instead of natural gas to generate electricity, producing no CO₂ emissions, with water as the main byproduct.
The project is a proof of concept designed to show that large-scale hydrogen engines can reliably supply electricity under real-world grid conditions.
Wärtsilä believes the technology could provide backup power when wind and solar generation falls, helping stabilise renewable energy grids and support AI data centres.
While hydrogen remains expensive to produce, store, and transport, the successful trial marks a major step toward cleaner large-scale electricity generation.
