Chinese researchers at Wuhan University successfully implanted lab-grown "tooth buds" into adults, which developed into full functional teeth within 6 months. All 38 trial participants grew replacement teeth naturally.
The tooth buds are created by combining stem cells from the patient's dental pulp with a special scaffold that guides growth. Once implanted in an empty tooth socket, the bud develops roots, enamel, and nerves just like a child's tooth would. Think of it as replanting the seed of a tooth you already lost.
China approved the procedure for widespread clinical use in 2025. The FDA requires an additional 15-20 years of American trials, citing safety concerns despite thousands of successful Chinese cases. The dental implant industry, worth $6 billion in the US, would face existential threat from natural tooth regrowth.
American adults missing teeth face a choice: metal implants costing $4,000-$6,000 each with 20-year lifespans, or dentures costing $2,000+ requiring lifetime replacement. Natural regrown teeth would eliminate both markets.
Why does US medicine take 20 years to approve what China proves works today?
