The United States just had its biggest battery-storage quarter ever, adding enough new capacity to store more than 20 gigawatt-hours of electricity. 🔋⚡
During the second quarter of 2026, the U.S. installed a record 20.2 GWh of new battery energy-storage capacity, bringing first-half additions to 30.8 GWh. The surge was driven overwhelmingly by large utility-scale projects connected to the power grid, which accounted for close to 90% of the quarter’s new capacity. These giant battery systems can store electricity when supply is plentiful, then release it later when demand rises or renewable generation falls. Battery storage is expanding rapidly as utilities look for ways to strengthen grid reliability and make better use of growing solar and wind generation. The latest quarter alone added more than 10% of all energy-storage capacity currently operating in the country, showing just how quickly this part of the electricity system is scaling up.
