The largest Catholic church compound in the world isn’t in Rome.
It’s in Aparecida, Brazil: the National Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aparecida, a city-sized pilgrimage complex dedicated to Brazil’s patroness.
The grounds cover about 1.35 million square meters — more than 130 hectares — with nearly 143,000 square meters of buildings. The basilica itself is laid out as a giant Greek cross (about 188 × 183 meters), with a 70-meter dome and the 109-meter Brasília Tower. Inside, tens of thousands can gather around the main altar. Outside, feast-day crowds can swell toward 200,000–300,000.
This is a working sanctuary, not just a monument. The compound includes a pilgrim support center with hundreds of shops, a medical clinic, restaurants, museums, a cable car to Cruzeiro Hill, and one of Latin America’s largest parking areas — thousands of cars and about 2,000 buses. Some 9 to 12 million people visit in a typical year.
Pope John Paul II consecrated the new basilica in 1980 while it was still rising. Pope Francis later prayed there during World Youth Day 2013. The original 18th-century image of Our Lady of Aparecida — found by fishermen in the Paraíba River — remains the heart of the shrine.
A note on “largest,” because the rankings depend on what you measure:
- Largest compound / sanctuary campus: Aparecida
- Largest church by Guinness total area: Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire (about 30,000 m², including annexes)
- Largest interior worship space, and the spiritual center of the Church: St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City
Aparecida is also often called the world’s largest cathedral, since St. Peter’s is a papal basilica, not a cathedral.
