Wind and solar reached a new milestone in the United States in 2025, together producing 17% of utility-scale electricity generation, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
That represents a dramatic increase from the levels seen a decade earlier. In 2025, wind generated about 464 TWh while utility-scale solar produced approximately 296 TWh. Including small-scale solar raises the combined wind-and-solar share to about 19% of total U.S. electricity generation.
However, the claim that wind and solar will reach 36% by the end of 2026 is not supported by the EIA forecast currently available. EIA expects their combined share to rise to around 21% by 2027.
The trajectory is nevertheless significant. Solar is expanding rapidly, wind remains a major source of generation, and batteries are increasingly helping manage the variability of both.
America's electricity mix is changing quickly—but the transition is measured in years of capacity additions rather than a single jump from one energy source to another.
