Astronomers have witnessed one of the most elusive stages in the death of a massive star, catching the explosion within hours of its beginning and revealing the moment the blast wave emerged from the stellar surface.
The supernova occurred in a galaxy roughly 22 million light years from Earth, giving scientists a rare opportunity to study the event before it reached the brilliant phase in which most supernovae are normally discovered.
What they captured is known as shock breakout, the brief interval when the collapsing core launches an enormous wave of energy outward through the star until it finally erupts through the outer layers.
Observations of this phase have long been a major goal because it preserves information about the structure of the star immediately before destruction. Even more intriguing, the early expansion appeared remarkably smooth and symmetrical, offering new clues about how the explosion first develops before later becoming more complex.
These opening moments of a supernova matter far beyond the star itself.
They help astronomers understand how massive stars collapse, how stellar explosions evolve, and how elements forged inside stars are ultimately scattered into space, becoming part of future planets, atmospheres, and perhaps life itself.
