🚨Deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, scientists have detected something unexpected: oxygen appearing where sunlight cannot reach. At depths of roughly 3 miles, photosynthesis cannot explain the oxygen being measured.
⚫ The phenomenon has been nicknamed “dark oxygen.” Researchers studying the abyssal seafloor found oxygen concentrations increasing inside experimental chambers containing polymetallic nodules—potato-sized mineral deposits rich in metals such as manganese, iron, nickel, copper and cobalt.
⚡ The leading explanation is that these metallic nodules may generate electrical potential capable of splitting seawater into hydrogen and oxygen, somewhat like a natural electrochemical system. However, this mechanism has not yet been conclusively proven, and scientists are continuing to investigate exactly how the oxygen is produced.
🔬 The discovery is important because it shows that oxygen production does not always have to be biological or powered directly by sunlight. If confirmed and better understood, this process could change how scientists think about deep-sea ecosystems and the chemistry of other oxygen-poor environments.
