According to ECA International’s 2025–26 Location Ratings, Bern topped 275 cities worldwide to claim the number one spot.

The rankings looked at everything that shapes daily life:

healthcare access

air quality

infrastructure

housing & utilities

safety & political stability

leisure and lifestyle

climate

Bern stood out for getting the balance right — a clean environment, reliable public services, strong safety, and a high quality of life without the chaos of mega-cities.

Europe dominated the list, taking all of the top 10 spots and 38 of the top 50, showing how long-term investment in liveability is paying off as 2026 begins.
