The winter of 1963 brought the Netherlands to a near standstill. Roads became impassable and were shut down completely, while shipping traffic ground to a halt. With waterways frozen solid, some islands could no longer be reached by boat at all. Yet while transport collapsed, others found joy — cyclists braving the cold, skaters gliding over endless ice, and skiers turning flat landscapes into winter playgrounds. A season of disruption, but also of unforgettable winter scenes.
