In 1883, the eruption of Krakatoa unleashed a sound so powerful it wrapped around the planet. Sailors forty miles away suffered ruptured eardrums, while people as far as Australia heard the blast from nearly three thousand miles away. The shockwave from the explosion didn’t fade quickly either it circled the Earth seven times.
Scientists estimate the eruption reached an unimaginable 310 decibels at its source. To put that in perspective, sounds above 150 decibels can be fatal to humans. Krakatoa remains one of the most terrifying reminders of how overwhelming Earth’s natural forces can be.
