Every year pets fall into the canals and cannot climb out because the walls are too steep. The city decided a simple wooden step can be the difference between life and death.

So now Amsterdam is installing small escape staircases at high risk spots using its biodiversity fund proving that a city can be smart compassionate and practical at the same time.

Sometimes the kindest ideas are also the simplest.
