Detroit has launched the nation’s first electrified roadway to charge electric cars

Detroit has launched the nation’s first electrified roadway, marking a major step toward the future of electric transportation. The road features coils embedded beneath the pavement that wirelessly transfer power to electric vehicles as they drive over them—no stopping, no plugging in.
Test vehicles equipped with specialized receivers are able to draw continuous energy while in motion, proving that dynamic charging can work in real-world conditions. The technology is especially promising for buses, delivery fleets, and municipal vehicles, which follow predictable routes and could operate all day without long charging breaks.
By shifting charging from stationary stations to the roadway itself, the project points toward a future where EVs can rely on intelligent infrastructure rather than large batteries alone. This could reduce vehicle weight, lower costs, and ease range anxiety—one of the biggest barriers to widespread EV adoption.
Detroit’s pilot suggests a new model for urban mobility, where roads do more than move traffic. They actively power it.
