Denmark doesn't just use wind energy — Denmark IS wind energy.
This small Scandinavian nation of just 6 million people has accomplished something no other country has managed at scale: running on more than 60% wind power on an average annual basis. On the windiest days, Denmark produces so much electricity from turbines that it exports surplus power to Germany, Norway, and Sweden.
The numbers are staggering. Denmark operates over 6,000 wind turbines across its flat landscape and surrounding seas. Its offshore wind farms — including the iconic Horns Rev installations in the North Sea — are engineering marvels that have become global blueprints for how nations should build clean energy infrastructure.
But Denmark's wind story isn't just about turbines. It's about political will sustained across decades. Since the oil crisis of the 1970s, Denmark made a deliberate national decision to never again be held hostage by fossil fuel dependence. That decision has compounded into one of the most sophisticated renewable energy economies on Earth.
Danish companies like Vestas and Ørsted now export wind technology and expertise to over 80 countries. The innovation born from necessity has become Denmark's most powerful global export.
By 2030, Denmark aims to produce 110% of its electricity needs from renewables — exporting the excess as clean power to its neighbors. A nation showing the world that energy independence and sustainability are the same goal.
