Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has announced extremely powerful fast-charging technology designed to dramatically reduce EV charging times. Some next-generation charging stations are reported to reach power levels of around 1,500 kilowatts (1.5 MW).
Such ultra-high-power chargers could theoretically add hundreds of kilometers of driving range in just minutes, approaching the convenience of refueling gasoline vehicles. The technology is designed to work with specially engineered batteries capable of safely handling high charging currents.
However, charging speed also depends on battery chemistry, cooling systems, and the vehicle’s charging architecture. Infrastructure requirements are also significant, as megawatt-level charging stations require very strong electrical grid connections.
Ultra-fast charging technology represents one of the key innovations needed to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles worldwide.
