Toshifumi Suzuki, founder of 7-Eleven Japan and widely called the father of Japan’s convenience store industry, has died from heart failure at the age of 93.

Suzuki partnered with America’s Southland Corp in 1973 to launch 7-Eleven Japan, opening the country’s first store in Tokyo in 1974 despite heavy skepticism.
He transformed convenience stores by introducing data-driven inventory systems, rapid restocking, and ready-to-eat meals tailored to local customer demand.
Suzuki also helped rescue 7-Eleven’s struggling American parent company in the 1990s after it collapsed under massive debt from a leveraged buyout.
Japan now operates more 7-Eleven stores than any other country, with Suzuki widely credited for turning the brand into a global retail powerhouse.
