Denmark's wind energy program has made its electricity the cheapest and cleanest in Europe — and it is still accelerating.
Denmark's commitment to wind energy spans five decades — from the oil crisis of 1973, when the country made a deliberate national decision to end fossil fuel dependence, to today's extraordinary achievement of generating over 60% of national electricity from wind on an annual average basis. No other country has sustained this level of wind penetration for as long or as consistently.
The economics compound year after year. Danish wind farms built in the 1990s have paid back their investment many times over. New offshore wind farms are being contracted at prices below €50 per MWh — among the lowest electricity costs in European markets. And every new turbine added to the Danish fleet increases the country's export capacity — selling clean electricity to Germany, Norway, and Sweden during periods of surplus generation.
Ørsted's transformation from Danish Oil and Natural Gas to the world's leading offshore wind company encapsulates Denmark's national energy story. The company that once drilled for North Sea oil now operates offshore wind farms from the UK and Germany to the USA and Taiwan — carrying Danish wind engineering expertise to every corner of the global offshore wind market.
Denmark's next frontier is Power-to-X — converting surplus wind electricity to green fuels, green hydrogen, and synthetic chemicals. The country's Energy Island project in the North Sea will serve as a hub for offshore wind generation and Power-to-X conversion at continental scale.
