South Korea has released the first commercial solid-state EV batteries delivering 1,000-kilometre range and 80 percent recharge in 10 minutes.
Samsung SDI Solid-X cells replace liquid electrolyte with a solid lithium-ceramic composite that eliminates the flammability causing thermal runaway fires in conventional batteries. Energy density reaches 500 watt-hours per kilogram — more than double current best liquid electrolyte EV batteries — enabling full-size electric SUV range of 1,000 kilometres in a battery pack weighing 40 percent less than equivalent liquid-electrolyte systems at the same range.
The solid ceramic electrolyte prevents the lithium dendrite growth that causes premature capacity fade in liquid systems. Cycle life exceeds 1,500 full charge-discharge cycles before reaching 80 percent capacity retention, compared to 800 to 1,000 cycles for premium lithium-ion batteries — significantly reducing lifetime battery replacement costs for electric vehicle owners.
The 10-minute 80 percent recharge matches petrol station refuelling time for the first time, eliminating the primary remaining adoption barrier for electric vehicles beyond purchase price. Samsung SDI has contracted Solid-X supply to Hyundai, BMW, and Stellantis with production targeting 2 million cells monthly by end of 2026.
