Turning Tides: China’s Revolutionary "Seawater Rice"
In a monumental leap for global food security, Chinese scientists have perfected "seawater rice" strains specifically engineered to thrive in saline and alkaline soils. Initiated by the late "Father of Hybrid Rice," Yuan Longping, the project has successfully transformed once-barren coastal flats into golden paddy fields.
By overexpressing salt-tolerant genes from wild varieties, researchers achieved yields of 4.6 metric tons per acre in trial sites like Tianjin. With over 400,000 hectares already under cultivation, this innovation could eventually utilize 100 million hectares of salty land, potentially feeding an additional 200 million people. It’s a salty solution to a hungry world's prayers.
