The Netherlands just activated Hollandse Kust West — Europe's largest completed offshore wind installation, generating 1,500 megawatts from 102 turbines 53 kilometers off the Dutch coast, covering the electricity needs of 2 million Dutch households with zero emissions.
Each Siemens Gamesa SG 14-222 DD turbine stands 260 meters from seabed to blade tip with a 222-meter rotor diameter — the largest rotating structure installed in European waters. At North Sea wind speeds averaging 9.8 meters per second, the farm achieves a 54 percent annual capacity factor — the highest ever recorded for any European offshore installation.
Dutch electricity demand is 120 terawatt-hours annually. Hollandse Kust West delivers 7.1 terawatt-hours from a single installation invisible from the Dutch coast requiring no surface land. Three additional Hollandse Kust zones are approved targeting 6,000 megawatts total by 2030.
