Along certain highways in South Korea, long stretches of roadway have been transformed into clean energy corridors. Massive roofs covered with solar panels stretch above the lanes, capturing sunlight throughout the day while vehicles move beneath. These elevated solar arrays generate renewable electricity that feeds directly into the national grid, turning transportation infrastructure into a source of sustainable power.
Beneath some of these solar-covered highways, a protected bike lane runs between the traffic lanes. Cyclists ride safely under the shade of the panels, shielded from harsh sun, rain, and passing traffic. The design not only encourages eco-friendly commuting but also creates a cooler, more comfortable environment for riders during long journeys.
The project demonstrates how infrastructure can serve multiple purposes at once. Roads carry vehicles, solar panels generate energy, and cyclists gain protected routes across busy areas. By combining transportation, renewable energy, and urban design, South Korea shows how cities can innovate while supporting cleaner mobility and greener power production.
