The Star that Changed the Universe: the Cepheid Variable star M31-V1 in Andromeda
V1 in the Andromeda Galaxy - the Star that Changed the Universe • In 1923 Edwin Hubble used the 100-inch Hooker telescope at Mount Wilson Observatory to measure the distance to the Cepheid Variable star M31-V1 in Andromeda, also known as "variable number one”. Doing so he eventually measured it’s distance of 2,million light years, putting Andromeda well beyond our galaxy, thus proving the universe was far larger than once believed. •• Credit: NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA)
