In 2025, Japan will attempt the world’s first test of beaming solar power from space to Earth.
A small satellite, part of the OHISAMA project, will orbit 400 km above Earth.
It will capture sunlight using solar panels, convert it into microwaves, and beam the energy down to a receiver station in Suwa, Japan.
While the output is modest about 1 kilowatt (enough to power a kettle or TV) this is a proof-of-concept that could one day scale up to supply cities with unlimited clean power 24/7, unaffected by clouds or night.
If successful, it will mark a historic step toward space-based renewable energy, a dream first imagined decades ago.
