Germany is testing a new system that turns parked EVs into floating power banks to help charge electric ferries and reduce pressure on the electricity grid.
The BIDI-EL project was launched by Osnabrück University and ferry operator Norden-Frisia with nearly $200,000 in German government funding.
The system uses Vehicle-to-Grid technology, allowing parked EVs and solar panels to directly power ferry charging stations.
The project supports the fully electric Frisia E-I ferry, which carries 150 passengers between Norddeich and Norderney in around 30 minutes.
Researchers said using EVs as decentralized energy storage systems could maximize renewable energy use, stabilize the grid, and help move Germany closer to fossil-free maritime transport.
