Australia has embarked on a record-breaking project: constructing the world’s longest undersea cable, stretching over 4,200 kilometers, to deliver renewable solar energy to Singapore. Known as the Australia-Asia PowerLink, this project will connect massive solar farms in Australia’s Northern Territory with Southeast Asia.
The project will generate up to 20 gigawatts (GW) of solar power, supported by one of the world’s largest battery storage systems. The undersea cable will then transmit up to 3.2 GW of clean electricity directly to Singapore, covering about 15% of its total energy needs.
This innovation highlights how energy trade is shifting from fossil fuels to renewables. Instead of exporting coal or gas, Australia will export sunlight converted into power, helping Singapore cut emissions and secure long-term energy security.
The project also sets a global precedent for cross-border renewable energy cooperation, showing how countries can share resources to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral future.
