The UK Hydrogen Motorway Program installs solar canopy structures averaging 1.8 megawatts at each service area, pairing on-site electrolysis units that continuously convert solar electricity and water into compressed hydrogen. Each station maintains 48 hours of hydrogen storage. The program covers all major UK motorway routes including the M1, M6, M25, and M5, creating complete national coverage with no hydrogen fuel gaps on any route between Scotland and the far south of England.
Hydrogen fuel cell trucks operating on UK motorways pay 12 percent less per kilometer than diesel equivalents, making hydrogen commercially competitive without ongoing government subsidy for high-mileage commercial freight operators across Britain.
