South Korea just unveiled a battery that could change electric vehicles forever.
Samsung SDI has showcased new solid-state battery technology promising up to 80% charge in about 9 minutes, a potential 20-year lifespan, and energy density reaching around 900 Wh/L — far higher than many current lithium-ion batteries. The company says the batteries are safer because they replace flammable liquid electrolytes with solid materials, helping reduce fire risks and improve stability.
Samsung SDI has already built a pilot production line and delivered early samples to automakers for testing. Mass production of its all-solid-state batteries is currently targeted for 2027, while ultra-fast charging technology is planned earlier.
If the technology reaches large-scale production, it could dramatically reduce charging times, increase driving range, and make future EV batteries lighter, longer lasting, and safer than today’s designs.
