In 2017, the Netherlands' national railway system, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), became the first in the world to be powered entirely by wind energy.

Through a partnership with the energy company Eneco, NS secured long-term contracts to purchase enough wind power to fuel all of its trains.
